In this section we will discuss the payment methods for a rented car. Since it is the most used payment method, we will deal with credit cards in a special way, though we will also mention debit cards and cash. Our goal is to inform you about the characteristics of each of these payment methods and about their advantages and disadvantages. For starters, we will say that it is highly important to make the reservation of the car, especially during season time, and in order to do so you need a credit or debit card ?though the latter will cause you many troubles? and you will not be able to pay cash. Next, we will describe these three methods of payment.
Credit card: Credit cards are worldwide valid to rent cars. They also allow you to make the reservations without any problem. As a benefit, these give the user a free insurance for the rented car and therefore, you can save money. Car insurance is mandatory and inescapable. However, the coverage they offer is not the best one. The car insurance you hire will surely have a series of features that will make you and the agency feel at ease; whereas the credit cards’ coverage only deals with the legal aspect of the insurance and other superfluous aspects. Furthermore, you can ask for the same insurance you have for your personal car. This is easily done and you will not have to pay extra money.
When you offer to pay a service by credit card, agencies always agree, since this payment method assures the agency that it will be able to charge the service and any other damage done to the car. On the other hand, it shows agencies that you are a financially stable person, and it corroborates all the personal information that you give when hiring the service.
Some agencies accept debit cards, others do not. This is not the desired method of payment by car rental agencies, and therefore, you may run into some trouble. Generally, they are easily accepted when returning the car as opposed to when picking it up. This is so because debit cards do not provide the kind of safety that credit cards do. If you want to make a reservation by phone, a debit card is almost useless.
Another problem caused by debit cards is that they can create confusion. Many people who own this type of cards make or try to make reservations with it thinking that it is a credit card. However, this is not the biggest problem; the real problem is that many people do not make reservations and go to the agency with their card in hand. When in the agency the client is informed that this type of card is not accepted, they go mad and state they have seen on the Internet that the agency does accept them or that they have called to ask. This is when the agency informs them that they are confused: that the card they own is not a credit but a debit card. You may find this funny, but we highly recommend that you know what type of card you have, since many people get confused.
Nowadays, cash payments are almost impossible. Unless it is a small car rental agency, this payment method will be rejected both for making reservations and for paying for the service. Even small agencies, which do accept this payment method, accept it when returning the car and not when picking it up. As we have already mentioned, when picking up the car the agency has to feel sure of you, and paying in cash is not a guarantee at all.
If a car rental agency accepts this payment method when picking up the car, they will ask you for a big deposit, which will be more than the cost of renting a car, in order to make sure you will return the car. If you get the agency to accept cash, you have to ask for a receipt in which it is stated that you have already paid in cash, since this will be your only payment voucher.
